Blank in Pride & Prejudice?

Why in Pride & Prejudice is there a ______ in the text sometimes when refering to a "shire" or the militia, right before another word? I have found this oddity in several versions of Pride & Prejudice, but I've never ran across a reason for it. Does anyone know the grammatical purpose of such a __________ ?
