Why is it that oddity is embraced later in life, but during childhood it's bad?

Let me explain. Plenty of "weird" people are famous... Michael Jackson... David Bowie aka Ziggy Stardust... Stanley Kubrick... Marilyn Manson... even the modern Lady Gaga is famous for both her songs and strange behavior/appearance. But why is it that during childhood/adolescent, if you were considered weird, you were persecuted, but later on in life, you become interesting and "fresh"?
