I can't attach to yahoo main page directly - www.yahoo.com?

Now if I go to it through a google search I can get there - but not the plain main page - it has to be a sub menue like yahoo answers - or my personal yahoo page, or yahoo mail. I am running windows 7 and IE 8. It has had a little trouble on and off and now it is completely shut down. Google is my main page and I turned it to yahoo and I just get the - Oops! This link appears to be broken. If I then do a yahoo search I can click on any yahoo link and get there as long as it is NOT www.yahoo.com main home page. I am stumped and I can not find a answer to directly address this oddity.
