Are Mormons also Christians too?

In Joseph Smith's days they viewed Christians as apostates, so I find it strange that they want to be lumped in together with the Christians now. They have very unorthodox views... if your definition of a Christian is someone who believes in the Trinity, who believes that humans can never attain Godhood, then they do not fit the mold
